Why build with timber?
- Nothing beats the natural look and feel of real timber for decking, patios, screens and bench seats.
- Timber is sustainable and the best building material for the environment (see below).
- Timber is tolerant to the salty air in coastal regions.
- Timber is non-slippery and comfortable under foot.
- Timber hides stains and can easily be cleaned with deck wash.
- A timber deck can periodically be re-sanded and sealed for that brand new look and feel.
Sustainability
The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association states that wood surpasses steel and concrete in the following categories:
- Energy use
- Resource use
- Pollution
- Environment impact
- Green Building

Our Cedar is sourced from Canada, where there has been a zero deforestation level for over 20 years.
This data (left) on the life cycle of carbon dioxide emissions of different building materials was generated in Europe, which committed to ambitious carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction targets through the Kyoto Protocol. The CO2 absorbed by growing forests and stored in wood products offsets the energy required to harvest, process, transport and maintain those products over time - which is why their net emissions are below zero.
